Profile: Wayne D. Prentice, G.G.
Finegems.com is led by Wayne D. Prentice, a Graduate Gemologist, former GIA Resident Gemology Instructor, award-winning gem cutter, gem broker, consultant, and developer of diamond market tools. His work combines formal gemological training, hands-on manufacturing experience, market analysis, and a global network built over more than 35 years in gems, diamonds, and fine jewelry.
Wayne helps private clients, collectors, jewelers, designers, and companies make better decisions when buying, selling, evaluating, or commissioning important gems and jewelry. His approach is practical, discreet, and client-first: identify the material, understand the market, evaluate risk, and protect value before a decision is made.
Education & GIA Foundation
Wayne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by his Graduate Gemologist degree in residence from the Gemological Institute of America.
After completing his GIA studies, Wayne was selected to become a GIA Resident Instructor in Colored Stones and Gem Identification. During his years teaching at GIA in Santa Monica, he worked in a rare era of gemological education, alongside respected instructors and mentors shaped by Richard T. Liddicoat, widely regarded as the Father of Modern Gemology.
Liddicoat's open-door presence and personal connection with resident students helped define a culture of curiosity, rigor, and practical judgment that became part of the foundation for the global GIA of today. Teaching students from around the world further sharpened Wayne's expertise in gem identification, treatments, origin issues, laboratory reasoning, and the real-world judgment needed to evaluate important gems with confidence.
Gem Brokerage, Cutting & Consulting
Wayne's career has included wholesale gem dealing, brokerage of one-of-a-kind gemstones, precision-cut colored stones for designers, important diamonds, including colorless and fancy-color diamonds, and custom sourcing for private and trade clients. As a lapidary and gem manufacturer, he has cut and represented gemstones where beauty, brilliance, design potential, and value all matter.
His cutting background includes recognition as an AGTA Cutting Edge Award recipient, along with experience in diamond analysis for re-cutting and manufacturing diamond rough. That hands-on perspective is especially valuable when evaluating cut quality, repair potential, durability, yield, and whether a gemstone is being represented accurately.
Wayne has provided gemological consulting for private and commercial clients, with experience involving colored gemstones, diamonds, synthetics, treatments, jewelry manufacturing, sourcing, valuation guidance, and quality control. Selected consulting relationships have included Kennecott Minerals, D. Swarovski & Co., Chatham Inc., Kazanjian Inc., Ralph Mueller & Associates, Centaurus Diamond Technologies, and Cody Opal.
Diamonds, Lab-Grown Technology & DiamondMaster
Wayne's diamond experience includes both natural mined diamonds and laboratory-grown diamonds. He was a founder of Star Corp, associated with early commercial HPHT diamond technology and the first production of colorless grown diamonds in the early 1990s. That background gives him a rare perspective on the changing relationship between rarity, manufacturing cost, market pricing, and long-term value.
He is also the founder and developer of the Troy Diamond Report and the DiamondMaster App, created to provide a broader international view of diamond values across currencies, gold, diamond shapes, sizes, and market categories. The guide later expanded to include appreciation-rate tools for mined diamonds and wholesale pricing guidance for created lab-grown diamonds.
Industry Relationships & Representation
Wayne has worked with and represented important industry names, including procurement and sales representation for rare gems, estate jewelry, and historically significant jewels. These relationships reflect the kind of trusted access and discretion required when working with exceptional gems and private collections.
Broader Advisory Background
In addition to gems and jewelry, Wayne is the broker and owner of Propertygems Real Estate Brokerage in Santa Barbara, California, and has held a California Department of Real Estate license since 1998 and a broker license since 2002. This broader advisory background supports his understanding of hard assets, negotiation, due diligence, privacy, and long-term value.
Finegems.com brings these disciplines together for clients who need informed guidance, whether the question involves a rare colored gem, an important diamond, a custom jewelry project, an estate piece, a buying opportunity, or a decision about natural versus laboratory-grown diamonds.
